Did you know that wheelbarrow walking has many benefits?
It strengthens the hands and wrists muscles, as well as the core muscles and shoulders, it contributes to sensory regulation, bilateral coordination, and much more!
So next time, when you want to find an easy way to work on those upper extremity muscles or contribute to sensory regulation - just grab a partner and go on a wheelbarrow walk!
You can start by placing your hands above the knees while they “walk” on their hands, progress to placing your hands below the knees, and finally hold them from their ankles while they “walk” using their hands - the latter will be the most challenging position. Most important: Have fun! Try doing it on different textures, give them a challenge - count how many steps they can take, or give them a challenge to touch different objects while wheelbarrow walking, you can even incorporate a puzzle!

Language and movement often go hand in hand! When trying to get your child to say more, get them moving and see if they begin to imitate or produce more words. It's also the perfect time to model words such as "go", "stop", "fast", "slow", "more" and "all done".
We love to use yoga poses such as Roly-poly, boat and plank pose to work on core strengthening for our kiddos. Core strength is important for gross and fine motor skills such as; single leg balance, kicking a ball, writing and sitting posture.
